Christmas Tree Decorating with Birds and Beads

Would you like to add that special little touch to your Christmas tree that will make your guests’ eyes light up and their lips utter that breathless “Wow!”?

Then you might want to try this little trick that I use every year. When decorating my Christmas tree, I never neglect the final touch.

I always hang doves from the ceiling with strings of beads in their mouths as though they were flying in and decorating the tree. I use white thread to suspend the birds and pushpins to secure them to the ceiling. Right bird with beadsYou can attach the beads to the birds’ beaks with hot glue or with straight pins. Left bird with beadsThey can also be attached to the feet. The string of beads should be long enough to drape the end over a limb of the tree. Place the doves at different distances from the Christmas tree.

The end result should look like the doves are decorating the tree with beads. A dove hanging an ornament on the Christmas treeI also like to have one or two of the doves carrying Christmas ornaments attached to their feet. Of course the Christmas tree is already decorated with several well-placed doves among the other Christmas ornaments.

In addition to hanging birds from the ceiling and placed throughout the tree, I place bird nests filled with tiny decorative eggs. Naturally I also put a little mama bird in the nest as well, to keep the little eggs warm and comfy.

Bird with nest and eggs

Children love seeing the doves "decorating" the tree. Every Christmas it’s a special treat searching for the little bird’s nest with all the tiny little eggs.

And of course, it’s a special treat for me just watching the children expore the tree, rearranging the eggs, rearranging the birds and trying to make the doves really fly.

What you will need for hanging your birds:

  • White thread
  • Two pushpins for each bird
  • Two straight pins for each bird
  • Optional hot glue

Bird Hanging Tips

Hanging the birds in a manner that looks natural and graceful can be tricky. Here are some quick tips:

  • Use thread that is the least visible when hanging from the ceiling. I use white cotton thread.
  • Attach two strings of thread to the bird’s back.
  • Cut the strings long enough to reach from the ceiling to the level you want your bird to hang. Cut twice as much thread as you think you’ll need. It’s easy to cut off extra, but it can be frustrating to have to start over.
  • Wrap the first thread around a straight pin with a white ball head. Insert the pin at an angle near the head of the bird. The white head of the pin should be toward the head of the dove and inserted toward the tail. The angle is important in preventing the thread from slipping out when the bird is hung.
  • Wrap thread around a second pin and insert at an angle, but this time the white head will be near the tail and inserted toward the head.
  • You now have two threads inserted in the back of the dove. Wrap the end of each thread around a clear pushpin to be inserted in the ceiling. You can adjust the distance of the dove from the ceiling by adjusting the number of turns around the pushpin.
  • When your threads and pins are in place and the birds are ready for hanging, you can temporarily insert the ceiling pushpins in the back of the birds. When you’re at the top of your ladder and you’re ready to hang your doves, just remove one pushpin at a time and insert in the ceiling.
  • After hanging your birds to the ceiling, if they are not hanging in the direction you intended, you can control the direction by repositioning one of the strings.
  • Occasionally, repositioning the beads they carry in their mouths or feet, to a different limb on the tree can also help to control the direction.

Hanging birds & beads from the ceiling can be an added dimension to your Christmas tree decorating. Just remember to not over do it, be safe and have fun.

Where to Get the Doves, Birds and Beads

When I first started using this decorating theme (about 20 years ago) I purchased the doves and cardinals at a decorators supply house.

But in 2005 I replaced the doves with some I found on an eBay store called Floraltrims. At the moment, I know of no other merchant that sells these.

The doves come in different sizes — I personally use the largest size (11″ beak to tail and 8 1/2″ wing span). They’re only a few dollars more and they have a much stronger visual impact.

You can find a great selection of beads here. I personally use beads like these.

Here are some pictures to show you what the finished Christmas Tree will look like:

    Hi Lorna,

Congratulations on your Church’s 8th anniversary. You can get the doves on eBay. You can get different sized doves. The doves in the pictures above are 11 inches from tip of beak to end of tail feathers.

I hope you have a great anniversary celebration!

Love the birds and the beads. I was was looking for something different to do with ribbons and came across this. Forget the ribbons, we are using the doves and the beads. Thanks so much for the idea and happy holidays from the Stirling Family.

To attach the beads to the bird’s mouth, use a ball head straight pin. Insert the pin directly under the beak, but not all the way in. Take your strand of beads and place one bead on each side of the pin. Push the pin in securely with the tip pointing down or at an angle. If the pin is inserted correctly, you shouldn’t have any trouble with it slipping out.

I love your idea. I did something similiar one year. I had a very high (12′) ceiling in the entry of an old house and I used tucked nylon net through out the tree and brought it out the top and attached an angel on the ceiling holding the net. Got lots of compliments!!

Love the birds. I decorate extremely 11 small rooms to be ready for my open house Dec 1/2 . I start in Sept. because i’m slow. I am always looking for new ideas. Your website is the best so far. Most of them give the same old stuff every year. My open house raises money for the local humane society. For me Christmas is not just a season but a year round hobby. After several years my husband has also gotten into it. Keep the good ideas coming.

What size birds is everyone using? I went to the store site on eBay and found several sizes, from 8″ wingspan to 6″ to 3″. Are you using the largest 8″ size or does this look too large? (I have a 9 foot ceiling — I’m sure the large ones would work from very high ceilings.)

They also have red flying cardinals at the store. The idea is just stunning! Can’t wait to do it! Maybe add also over the long banquet table, decorating the centerpieces and dropping sugared fruit to the table……Finally, an idea that is magical for adults too!

  36. 36

    November 12th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

Kathy - I use the largest size doves (8.5″ wingspan) and I have a 12 foot ceiling. In past years I’ve actually used a combination of large and small birds which can actually give it a more natural look. The 3″ wingspan is probably too small. Using the flying cardinals could look great too.

BTW - sounds like you have some great ideas!

I have always used 2 DOVES on my christmas trees. As our children were born I made ornaments for each of them. I connect a ribbon between the 2 doves and drap ribbons down to each of thier ornaments. I have been doing it now for 31 years. And I have been throught about 4 sets of doves. And after all it is our last name.

I can’t find the word(s) to describe the dove idea! I’ll go with “absolutely, stunningly awesome and glorious!” Another cool idea would be to find a miniature creche and place it atop the tree, with the doves coming to visit. May you feel truly blessed for your talents! Have a beautiful Christmas season!

Judy thanks! I’ll use both the 8.5″ and the 6″ wingspans, and I think I’ll have them drapping ribbon also, and then I’ll have them dropping sugared fruit and pearls and ribbon onto the table, and why not have them hold some mistletoe over the front door! It’ll make for a great theme! When I get it done I’ll see if I can post a photo link.

My Christmas tree is decorated with birds, nests, feathers, etc. Really cute and whimsical because I have very long feathers stuck into the top as though large birds have flown into it; plus berry garlands, etc. The dove idea is really great. I may do this with a different kind of bird or multiple kinds if I cannot find the doves. This is one of the most ingenuous ideas I’ve seen in a long time!

What a great idea! I have decorated my house with birds, year round, for years now and my tree is covered with eggs, bird nests and feathered friends but I never thought of hanging them from the ceiling, decoarting the tree! I’m going this weekend to buy a couple of birds and a strand of pearls.
This will not only look wonderful but will provide hours of entertainment for my 5 cats, as well as us people folk as we watch them stalk the fake birds….

I am impressed with the dove-idea! It is beautiful and will look good…doves simbolises the peace Jesus made possible for those who love Him and doves are also simbol of the Holy Spirit. Give this message through to others who see the tree and it gives meaning to it all.
What I want to add is this: be careful not to make the tree and doves, decorations and presents the main thing of Christmas though. Jesus came to earth and gave His live for us and that is what we celebrate on Christmas. He must get the MAIN attention and our children must know that!
A day of celebration and thanksgiving, but also a day of giving ourselves to Him to love and serve HIM.
The beautiful decorations and gifts should be a way to express joy for the GREATEST GIFT: GOD’S SON!

Love it. Thanks for sharing the pictures and the information on how you did it. I think it would be great as an outdoor theme with all God’s woodland critters ie; fawns , rabbits etc and the birds hanging from trees nearby using dental floss or fishing line. Or better yet in a lighted gazebo….YES!!!

Very beautiful! This year I’m going to decorate our Christmas tree with toys made by my daugter. We’ll make apples and other things like that of salt and flour, cover them with gold paint. Of course, I’ll by some new toys and decorations. But hand-made things will make the New Year Tree more tender. And I like your idea of the nest. I’ll do it! it’s so pretty and charming. You know, Christmas in Russia comes later on the 7th of January. We decorate our homes before New Year and only then comes Christmas. So I have time to do it this year.

I have hung angels from the ceiling circling the tree - this will be a fun alternative. To hang them, try using fishing line. It can be a little stiff, but in time it straightens out and is definitely great in not showing up.

Once I saw this, I HAD to do it….. but I couldn’t find any birds. I found some glittery red butterflies in a craft store and used those instead. Wow! What a lovely look that is - thank you for sharing it. I’ve been searching everywhere (dollar stores, craft stores, Wal-Mart) for fake birds for our high school play - we need birds to help Cinderella pick the lentils out of the ashes - and your link to Floraltrims on e-bay was just the right thing. I ordered a dozen of their colorful flying parakeets, and I think it’s going to look great. Thanks so much!

What a wonderful different idea. I love the idea of hanging doves as the final touch on your tree. That would result in having good discussion topics from anyone who would visit your house. Keep up the good ideas.

I stumbled upon your site in my search for more bird ornaments … the ones I had on my prior-year woodland Christmas tree motif were quite lovely, and very much enjoyed visually by all who saw, and physically by my two calico cats who found the real feather tails to be temptation beyond their restraint. I just love the doves hanging from the ceiling … beautiful to behold and beyond the reach of admiring furry paws! Thank you for sharing your creativity and how-to, and where-to-purchase information. Your Christmas tree is beautiful.

I’m looking forward to spending some time throughout the coming year planning for next Christmas. Your decorating idea with the doves is amazing! I never would have thought of anything like that. I loved your idea with the doves, saw it on the internet last year and used them. I found them in Hobby Lobby in the wedding area. I plan to use them again this year and buy some more. Your website is the best, thanks so much for all your ideas. Last year I had my green tree, this year I plan on using my white one and will still use the doves and maybe add a couple cardinals for some color. I love christmas.

I LOVE your idea of the doves decorating the tree!
And the nest! I can’t wait to start my tree, I have been collecting pine cones all year from my yard , I think I may add a “snowy” look to them and add them into the tree.
This is a very festive holiday idea! Thanks for the inspiration!

I absolutely, positively love these ideas. The doves decorating the tree are truly special. I had a “natural” theme to my tree last year with cute wooden bears, flowers and birds. I am going to add the doves to the top of the tree…it will be the perfect match. Thank you for this great idea.

I think this is a very nice idea. I have a Day Care. My children will love it.
Maybe next year, you can add small ornament animals under the tree. I always have a “kitten” sleeping under the tree, guarding the prezzies. You can always use your garden ornaments. Imagine a squirrel or a tortoise gathering under the tree to celebrate the special occasion.

    Merry Christmas

Wow! I really enjoyed reading your article on how to ‘decorate a Christmas tree with beads and birds’. I hope to do the same next year (I don’t think it would be possible to get the doves sent on time so close to Christmas and all).
I use gold beads with my tree every year and now with your idea I believe that it will just create that “extra special something” to the whole Christmas theme. Thank you for your generous gift of sharing such a fun and appealing idea. I hope my tree will look as attractive as yours does, I would like to send photo’s of my attempts in 2010 :-) Thanks.

I saw this two years ago, ordered the birds and right away put them on our ceiling. Everybody loved them. I bought enough for all 5 of our grown-up kids too.
We gave them the birds for Christmas- then they were able to do the same thing last year.

Such a cute idea. I ordered cardinals from Floraltrims and they are beautiful. I thought the red would be more dramatic. I have a woodland theme. Your idea makes my mind race. Sugarplum fairies for a fantasy tree. Also toy airplanes and helicopters for a toy tree. Hot air balloons would be adorable. And of course angels. Seagulls for a beach tree. Parrots for the tropics. Anyway your site is wonderful and I thank you for helping me get excited for Christmas decorating. It’s going to be a great year. Happy Holidays!
