When To Start Planning For Christmas

We love Christmas. We love planning for Christmas, but we don’t love getting stressed out over Christmas. Here are 7 stress-relieving tips to help you through.

A little planning can go a long way in relieving stress and increasing pleasure during the Christmas season. You don’t have to wait until the last minute to start planning.

Start Planning Early in the Year.

Right after Christmas, the after-Christmas sales begin. Take advantage and buy Christmas decorations and any other goodies that will work for you next year.

A word of caution: don’t buy for the sake of buying. Don’t buy markdowns that are broken. You’ll find many beautiful items that may have been out of your budget before Christmas, but are now affordable.

Watch for sales all year. They happen every Holiday and in every season. Great Christmas gifts for men can be found around Father’s Day. Great Christmas gifts for women can be found around Mother’s Day. You get the idea.

Make a List of “Recipients” You Want to Buy Gifts For.

Your list may be the same list as last year, but the list may change depending on circumstances. Write down the names, so you’ll have them in front of you. Yes, really write them down and keep the list handy.

All through the year, keep your eyes open and when the sales begin, take advantage. Once again, don’t buy for the sake of buying. Select wisely. Buy it if you really like it, write down the name of the gift next to the recipient’s name.

Shop At Home All Year.

When you shop on the Internet, you have plenty of time to “window shop.” And items are not seasonal. They are available year round. And of course sites have sales and promotionals just as the stores do.

Make A List of the Gifts You Buy.

Sometimes we see things we like and we know it would make a great gift for someone on our “Recipients” list, but we haven’t decided whom the lucky one will be. Go ahead and buy it. Make a Gifts Purchased list. Every time you buy a gift, put it on the list. If you know to whom you want to give it, write the person’s name next to it and put it on the Recipients list as well.

You now have a cross-reference. No, it’s not too complicated and organized. It’s really easy. And if you don’t make notes, you’ll get confused when it comes time to wrap. You may not remember who is supposed to get what.

Wrap Sooner Not Later.

Don’t wait until Christmas Eve to start wrapping your presents. You may not be that bad, but I know many people who are. As soon as Christmas wrapping paper is placed on the store shelves, start buying and wrapping.

Wrap a few at a time and take time to make each one really beautiful. Make the people you love feel special. Allow your creativity to explode. You’ll enjoy giving your gifts even more.

Make A Record of What You Wrapped.

Each time you wrap a gift, write it down on your list of Recipients. If you have a list of gifts you have purchased, write the name of the recipient. If you haven’t made a list, this would be a good time to make one. It’s a lot easier to look at a list rather than to trust your memory.

Don’t make the mistake I made one year. I wrapped everything early and by the time Christmas arrived, I had forgotten what I had given to several people, or had forgotten exactly what it looked like. I now have a digital camera to take pictures of the gifts and I also have a list of recipients and what they’re getting. Problem solved.

Start Collecting Recipes.

Don’t wait until you a need a recipe to start looking for one. Start collecting recipes from friends, magazines, and on food containers. Organize them in a file or tape them in a notebook. But don’t stop there. Try the recipes out. Put stars beside the ones you like and would be proud to serve. When it comes time to whip something up, it will be fast and easy to make choices.

Christmas can be enjoyed all year. You don’t have to wait for the season to begin. All year you can collect recipes, get decorating ideas, window shop, and make purchases. Make your choices wisely. You don’t want to experience buyer’s regret.

Following this plan will help relieve stress during the busy holiday season. Have fun and keep on enjoying Christmas.

These are great ideas. What I did last year was to put together lists of what I decorated with, where I put it, when I needed it and an estimated list of consumables that I needed year to year (such as the edibles for the advent calendar). I laminated this so I have it year after year. It’s a built in calendar, decorating and shopping list all in one. Hope this helps destress the most wonderful time of the year.

I use these ideas. They are wonderful. An easy way to track what you have already wrapped is to highlight it on your recipients list after it is wrapped and stored away.

During the last two Christmas’s I was pregnant and the only way I could keep track of gifts was to make my list on a post-it pad this way, when I purchased the gift I could label it and then as I wrapped the gifts place the post it on the bottom of the gift.
This helped make sure that the gifts could be used as decarative items until Christmas as well as eliminate names off of my list as soon as the were purchased.

Sue uses a highlighter and Melissa uses post-it notes to remind them who their wrapped presents are for. This is great. It sounds like they are both on top of things. Thanks to both of you for sharing with us.

I totally agree with this article and with that I’d say to plan your food and drinks list straight after the christmas just gone because if you,ve brought far too much and it has to go to waste then by making a note of this when you are still ’stuffed’ then it’ll all come flooding back and hopefully you won’t over buy next year! It works for me any way.

I love Christmas and every year around this time i always start to get excited (Especially as Harrods have opened their Christmas shop). The ideas of shopping on the internet is a lovely idea. But i like going to the shops and feeling the Christmas spirit…………..admitidely probably not a good idea the week before Christmas. I like being able to walk around the shops, listening to the Christmas music and being able to touch, feel and smell the things i buy. I made my own Christmas cards last year with my 3 year old son, each one contained a poem especially for that person and they went down a treat!! AM planning on doing my own gift wrap this year.

I, too, have kept a recipient list for over twenty years and it really does help keep gift purchases organized. I started this when my kids were small and I wanted to make sure I spent the same amount of money on each one. I actually designated one page for each (I use a journal -works great), list their gifts and even the price in the margin. After the kids pages I then use several other pages and list other relatives I buy for, i.e., brother, sister, nieces, nephews, etc. I list these and only leave one or two spaces between each. After I wrap the presents I make a red checkmark next to the item. On Christmas Eve I check my list to make sure all gifts are accounted for! I can tell you what my kids have gotten for Christmas since they were each born. (My oldest is twenty-five).

My wrapping tip is similiar to the others mentioned, except when I wrap early but do not want to add ribbon, bows & tags until closer to the 25th, I simply have taken an ink pen and on the bottom of the package I put initials or the first two letters of the name, just so I know who the gift is for later. It is very inconspicuous and no one will notice! (especially on printed papers) Example: MI for Mike, MO for Monika, etc.

great article,i do all these things mentioned, the other thing ive done is taken photos of where all the xmas decorations and ornaments go,i have so many that i usually have to move things around to accomadate the tree and so forth,so the photos make it easier to decorate the house because your not wondering what went where last year.

You have such lovely ideas that I hope u would like this one too.

I started a collection for my niece when she was in her teens. The collection went on for three Christmases.

One Xmas it all started when I gave her a Hope Chest. A carved wooden chest that was of a size 13 x 9 x 10 inches (bigger than a jewellery box) that was gilded with silver at the edges.

During the year after, I found a silver hand-crafted hand mirror by luck and immediately bought it for her.
And ever since then, it has been a piece of jewellery, a ring & a box, folding photo-stand and each time I would add a note to tell her it was for her Hope chest.

When she left for college, she had a collection to take with her.

that I have 4 kids of my own and I am not pour (I’m not rich either….) I really work hard to make christmas a traditional thing. One of my biggest dreams for the future is to be the grandma that has the best christmas! This takes me one step closer with much less of a headache! Thank you so much for sharing you rideas.

    To Jo,
What a great idea. You must love your niece a lot. Your thoughtfulness is exactly the way people should buy gifts. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

    To Mary Jo,
Christmas is such an important time of year. Our family looks forward to being together, sharing food and gifts and love for each other and our Lord. Always take pictures and don’t rely on your memory. Pictures are true treasures you will cherish more every year.

Every year my husband and I decide on the theme of next years christmas. As we are putting our ornaments and decorations away we seperate the ones we wil use the next year into a box labeled “next christmas” and we place all the others in their designated boxes. We write down the things we will need and go shop the christmas sales. We get tons of great things this way. I love this tip. Everyone should use it.

I start my “next Christmas” list the day after Christmas. I open a computer file, placing each person’s name in line, and over the year, I purchase gifts and open the “Christmas file” and type in the item, along with a brief description of the item. It is so easy to keep up with what you have bought and what is needed this way. Additionally, this may be offensive to some, but I “re-gift” some items that I receive at Christmas and I can almost immediately fill a vacant spot with something that I may have received and not needed, but would be perfect for someone on my list. For instance, I received a beautiful Vera Bradley purse a couple of years ago. I don’t need another purse and am not a great Vera Bradley lover, but my sister adores the Vera Bradley line, so I simply placed the purse back in the gift box and went to my computer and checked off my sister’s name on the recipient list - She was thrilled last year when I gave her the purse. I was able to write a thank you note to the person who gave me the purse, and sincerely thank them for their generous and much appreciated gift! I am usually finished with the majority of my Christmas shopping by late October…the one exception is the young children and teens on my list Their “wish list” changes so drastically from month to month that it is often wiser to wait until the last minute to purchase gifts for these individuals because styles and “hot” items change so quickly

I love Christmas and have done for years we are a large family both imediate and extended.
I tend to start shopping for gifts in the sales at christmas ready for the next christmas I keep a book in my handbag with the presents that i have and who for. I always have something just incase under the tree and all my wrapping and cards are packed made and written by the end of November so that i can enjoy Christmas and not run around looking for main bits last minute expcially as i work over christmas period. The kids dont have faddy main presents the latest “in” presents tend to be made up with stocking fillas the kids of all ages still have a stocking and some of the adults prefer to have a lot of fun novelty presents than a main present.

TO MAKE WRAPPING EASY - DESIGNATE A COLOR FOR EACH PERSON. THEN WRAP THE GIFT AHEAD. YOU WILL NOT NEED GIFT TAGS UNTIL CHRISTMAS IF YOU CHOOSE. SO IF THOSE OLDER KIDS SNOOP AROUND FOR SANTA’S GIFTS THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHO HAS WHAT, IN WHAT BOX. DO NOT FORGET A COLOR FOR JESUS WHO’S BIRTHDAY IT IS.

LIFE IS EASY - MERRY CHRISTMAS AND ENJOY.

I love the idea of shopping for Christmas decorations at after Christmas sales. I also buy cards, gift wrap, ribbons etc. I put it all away, then next year when I wrap my gifts its like a wonderful helpful Christmas present to find all my new wrap, etc ready and waiting for me.
I also used to find that I had a difficult time remembering that special something for each person. Now that I keep a list of names of people I buy for handy — I write down gift ideas for each person all through the year. If I am out shopping and see the item on sale I pick it up and mark my notes.
I had not thought of the recipe idea (clipping, trying out and keeping in a file — I will be doing that in 2009.

I LOVE all of these ideas and have used several of them.
I have one tip I didn’t see here…..when you wrap early or want the gifts to be a surprise until Christmas (or to keep the temptation of peeking to a minimum) I wrap each recipients gifts in their own wrapping paper. Each one in the family have their own so that way at least I know who’s they are. If you tend to forget simply take a sample of the paper and put their name on the back and file it with your shopping lists.

My gift each year includes a Christmas tree ornament. I try to have a theme for each child ( Santa, Angel, Snowman, Horse, Car, etc.) or to choose one that is a happy reminder of something that happened during the year (the bird house we hung in the back yard, the snowman the boys next door made after the big snow, the piano marking a first recital). I love shopping for these gifts for their Christmas memory trees. As each child leaves to start their own home, they take their happy family reminders with them to warm the Holidays no matter where they are.

Merry, Merry Christmas everyone!!!!! Love Judy D.

    Hello everyone,

just wanted to thank you all for the lovely article and comments. I love Christmas and I just wanted to add that making decorations is so wonderful to get the spirit going. There are a lot of easy crafts to do with everyone fron children to teens to adults and I find it brings people together. My boyfriend and I started making decorations in October last year and it was such a good feeling to see our tree covered in the hings we have made.

    Hope everyone is having fun

    Hi Everyone,
At the beginning of the new year, I buy a small notebook that I can keep in my purse. On the top of each page I write the name of one of my gamily members or friends that I get gifts to. (each ome has separte page for the individual)
As I spent time with these individuals or shop with them throughout the year, I listen and watch to see what they want but do not buy for themselves. When the chance comes I wrtie down the iems they wish for. (also add the colors of rooms if they redecorating or sample of wallpaper, etc.) During the year, it is so easy to shop for birthdays and then at Christmas I ust take my notebook and shop only for the items in otebook. So much easier then to worry about what to get them each year not to mention the relief of stress.
Last year I started to pamic wondering what to get my mom who is 82. She slipped me a hint that she needed an ice cream scoop that had handle that she
could releae the ice cream once it was scooped up. When the time cme to buy the gift, I found an ice cream scoop for less than 10.00 and bought a carton of her favorite ice cream to go with it. She said it was the perfect gift.

Thanks for the tips. Planning is the biggest part of preparing for Christmas. Often the cost around the holidays is much greater than anyone anticipates. Shopping year round helps to spread out the cost and you can land good deals throughout the year. For more great holiday tips visit hisandhersdiy.com.
